Two teams plays with five players each on the rectangular floor called 'the court', to throw the opponents hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. Games are played in four quarters of 10 minutes or 12 minutes as per FIBA or NBA rules respectively. General overtime period is 4 minutes in length.

An attempt to throw the ball of opponent's basket is called 'Shot'. A successful attempt is worth two points or three points, if the shot is taken from beyond the three points arc i.e. 6.75 meters from the basket in the international games and 7.24 meters in NBA (National Basketball Association) games. Shot of one point can be done through shooting from the foul line after foul is made.

Any team's five players may be on the ground at one time. Substitutions can only be done when play is stopped. For men's and women's teams, standard uniform included a pair of shorts and a jersey with visible number of the players.

The game is controlled by the officials including the referee, one or two umpires and the table officials. The table officials are performing the task of keeping scores update, time keeping, individuals and team fouls made, substitutions of players etc.
